Motorhome tyres have a "CP" marking on their sidewalls. They are specially designed to withstand heavy loads and last longer than regular tyres.

Going on an adventure and enjoying great getaways during the holidays is the ultimate goal for all motorhome enthusiasts who love travelling and beautiful destinations. To avoid being stranded by the roadside, it is advisable to check the condition of your tyres thoroughly. Equipping yourself with suitable and well-maintained tyres is the minimum requirement for travelling with peace of mind.

What type of tyres for a motorhome?

Often marked with the letter "C" for "Commercial" or "CP" for "Camping-Car", this type of tyre better supports the heavy loads typical of motorhomes.

Although not mandatory, CP tyres are highly recommended due to their robustness and ability to support the high loads specific to motorhomes.

Is it mandatory to fit CP tyres on a motorhome?

No, it is not mandatory to fit tyres with the "CP" specification on a motorhome, but it is advisable since a motorhome is heavier than regular passenger cars.
This versatile means of transport is also equipped to be a mobile home (kitchen, bathroom, toilets...). Therefore, it is necessary to have wheels capable of supporting heavy loads.

For this reason, manufacturers have developed more durable and resistant tyres. Classified among commercial vehicles, the motorhome is by default equipped with tyres that bear the C marking. These are approved and recommended tyres for commercial vehicles and vans. However, motorhomes support much heavier loads than these categories of vehicles. Therefore, it is more prudent to opt for a reinforced tyre that bears the CP marking.

When should you change the tyres on a motorhome?

The law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm. However, to ensure optimal grip and safety, it is advisable to replace your tyres before they reach this critical limit.

But, it is not just the tread depth that determines the end of a tyre's life. Over time, the materials that make up the tyres degrade, even if the tyres appear to be little worn. An undamaged motorhome tyre should ideally be replaced after 5 years of use.

Cracks, cuts, or deformations on the tread or sidewalls of the tyre can also indicate that your tyres need immediate replacement.

What is the lifespan of a motorhome tyre?

The lifespan of a motorhome tyre depends on several factors, including usage, maintenance, driving conditions, and tyre quality.
In general, tyre manufacturers recommend replacing motorhome tyres every 5 years, even if they have not reached the tread limit.

Some factors to consider when evaluating the lifespan of a motorhome tyre include:

  • Mileage: Tyres that cover long distances may wear out faster than those used for shorter trips.
  • Storage: Tyres that are properly stored in optimal conditions, away from sunlight, excessive moisture, and extreme temperatures, tend to last longer.
  • Tyre pressure: Maintaining the recommended tyre pressure contributes to even wear and prolonged lifespan.
  • Driving conditions: Driving on rough roads, difficult terrains, or in extreme weather conditions can accelerate tyre wear.
  • Tyre quality: Higher quality tyres often have a longer lifespan. Investing in quality motorhome tyres can therefore be cost-effective in the long run.

It is essential to regularly check the condition of the tyres, including the tread depth, to detect any signs of excessive wear, damage, or ageing. If the tyres show signs of deterioration, it is recommended to replace them promptly.

Where is the manufacturing date on a motorhome tyre?

The manufacturing date is indicated by the DOT (Department of Transportation) engraved on the side of the tyre. This code usually consists of 10 to 12 characters and ends with a series of 4 digits, which indicates the week and year of manufacture of the tyre. For example, "DOT 4723" means that the tyre was manufactured in the 47th week of 2023.

What are the dimensions of a motorhome tyre?

To avoid buying tyres that are too small or too large for your vehicle, the inscription on the sidewall of your tyres can guide you. It is presented as follows: 225/75 R16C 116Q (this is an example). This inscription indicates that the tyre has:

  • A width of 225 mm
  • A sidewall height of 168.75 mm (i.e., 75% of 225 mm)
  • A Radial structure
  • A rim diameter of 16 inches
  • C is the specific marking for commercial vehicles, caravans, and motorhomes weighing less than 3.5 tonnes.
  • A load index of 116 (this is the maximum weight the tyre can support, here it corresponds to 1250 kg)
  • A speed index Q (indicating the maximum speed supported by the tyre, here 160 km/h)

So, take a look at this inscription and order models with the same dimensions.

What is the correct pressure for motorhome tyres?

The optimal pressure varies depending on the model and weight of the vehicle. Always refer to the recommendations of your motorhome manufacturer for precise inflation pressures.

Tyre pressure is a crucial element not only for safety but also for the performance of your motorhome.

Correct pressure is essential for:

  • Ensuring Optimal Grip: Properly inflated tyres offer the best contact with the ground, directly affecting your vehicle's ability to accelerate, turn, and brake effectively.
  • Avoiding Overheating: Under-inflated tyres can overheat, increasing the risk of blowouts.
  • Reducing Wear: Inadequate pressure leads to premature and uneven tyre wear, reducing their lifespan.
  • Saving Fuel: Under-inflated tyres offer greater rolling resistance, which means higher fuel consumption.

Tip: If you do not use your motorhome during the winter or for long periods, consider using chocks to relieve the pressure on the tyres and protect them with covers.

Should you overinflate the rear tyres of your motorhome?

"CP" tyres can be overinflated by 0.75 bar on the rear axle of your motorhome. Without indication in your manufacturer's manual, you can set 4.75 bars at the front and 5.5 bars at the rear. Your "CP" tyres will not suffer tread deformation as they are designed to withstand these high pressures.

Why do motorhomes have small wheels?

With smaller wheels, the motorhome is often closer to the ground, which can optimise stability, especially when loaded. Smaller wheels offer better manoeuvrability and make it easier to handle, an asset in restricted or hard-to-reach places.

They are also lighter, which can help reduce the overall weight of the vehicle.

Finally, the choice of smaller wheels may also be dictated by the design and interior layout of the motorhome, allowing for optimal use of space on board.
